Samsung, Nokia and LG leads 5G patents

In terms of 5G patents granted, Samsung, Nokia and LG leads followed by Huawei, Qualcomm and ZTE

As of November 2019, 87,752 5G patent declarations were identified, which resulted in 22,604 5G patent families of which 98% are active where at least one family member has an active status; 78% have been filed in at least one of the following offices – the USPTO, EPO or through the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) route.

The IPlytics platform integrates data from worldwide patents, patent declarations, standards documents and contribution documents. Patent declarations cannot be interpreted as legal evidence for actual essential patents but patents granted provides the real understanding in a competitive scenario. In order to identify declared 5G patents, the standards and patent declaration database from the IPlytics Platform was searched and correlated.

Huawei has the largest declared 5G portfolio, followed by Samsung, LG and Nokia. Qualcomm and Intel are the largest US companies holding declared 5G patent families and Sharp and NTT DOCOMO are the largest Japanese 5G declaring companies. The Chinese companies Vivo Mobile and Guangdong Oppo have newly entered the 5G patent market.

Samsung, Huawei, LG, Nokia and ZTE are the Top 5 companies in terms of number of declared 5G families that have been filed internationally in at least one office say USPTO, EPO or PCT. Here, Samsung has the largest international 5G portfolio followed by Huawei, LG, Nokia, ZTE and Ericsson.

According to IPlytics, the patent granting process may take several years; since 5G is a recent technology and 5G patents may be just recently filed. Many of the declared 5G patents will be granted at some point in the future. In terms of 5G patents granted, Samsung owns the largest 5G portfolio, followed by Nokia, LG and Huawei. The Chinese companies, ZTE, China Academy of Telecommunications Technology (CATT), OPPO and Vivo have very low grant rates.

One needs to see the performance of Top 5 Companies – Samsung, Nokia, LG, Huawei and Qualcomm in 2020 with respect to 5G patents granted. Focus would be also on service providers and device manufacturers on how they would perform in future with respect to 5G patents.
