Reliance Jio’s Digital Strategy 2.0

Jio's next strategy is to enable 100 million users on JioPhone and 50 million users on JioGigaHomes

Reliance Jio has done a commendable job by signing 215 million customers in a record time of 22 months and is now spreading its wings both on consumer space through JioPhone platform as well as home user space through JioGigaHomes.

In the last one year, the data usage has increased from 125 crore GBs/month to 240 crore GBs/month; voice usage from 250 crore minutes per day to more than 530 crore minutes per day; and video consumption from 165 crore hours per month to more than 340 crore hours per month. Despite breaking all records on voice, data and video usage, the capacity utilization of Reliance Jio networks is less than 20 per cent which means the company can multiply its customer base both on JioPhone and JioGigaHomes without any additional investment as the company is on track towards achieving 99 per cent population coverage with LTE thereby covering every district, taluk, gram panchayat and villages of India.

Presently, Reliance Jio has more than 25 million JioPhone users and is planning to take it to the next level with added functionalities and new model JioPhones as the company is targeting 500 million Indians who still use feature phones and are not hooked to Internet.

Starting July 21st, Jio is launching JioPhone Monsoon Hungama Offer whereby one can exchange existing feature phone for a brand new JioPhone for just Rs. 501. This is a good strategy as it will give additional revenue for the company and it will also replace existing JioPhone as there has been lot of complaints which needed to rectified at the earliest.

It is a good strategy that in due course Reliance will phase out JioPhone by launching a new JioPhone model called JioPhone2 starting 15th August for an introductory price of only Rs. 2,999. I hope this will be far better in terms of battery life, sound quality, camera quality and bigger screen size than existing JioPhone model.

The goal that I have now set for our Jio team is to enable 100 million users on this JioPhone platform in the shortest possible time said Mukesh Ambani, CMD, Reliance Industries during 41st Annual General Meeting.

Having taken the country to a new trajectory in terms of wireless broadband, the company is determined to move India to among the Top 5 in fixed line broadband too. The company has already invested over Rs. 250,000 crore till date for creating digital infrastructure to provide mobile and broadband connectivity across the country. The company is now extending this fiber connectivity to homes, merchants, small and medium enterprises and large enterprises simultaneously across 1,100 cities to offer the most advanced fiber based broadband connectivity solutions.

For the home user the service will be called JioGigaHomes and it will provide ultra high definition entertainment on large screen TV, multi-party video conferencing, voice activated virtual assistants, virtual reality gaming, digital shopping and smart home solutions like security cameras, home appliances which can be securely controlled using a smartphone.

Jio Gigafiber is currently running beta trials in tens of thousand of homes and starting August 15, one can register for JioGigaFiber through MyJio and Jio.com. The company will prioritise JioGigaFiber rollout to those localities where they receive the highest number of registrations.

Target is 5 crore JioGigaHomes added Mukesh Ambani.

So, 75 million new users on JioPhone Platform and 50 million JioGigaHomes will help the company to complete its digital strategy 2.0 journey say by March 2020.
