Reliance Jio took the lead by being the first operator to launch 4G services pan-India. Once again, Jio is putting in place a 5G ecosystem – network, devices and use cases, to become the first operator in the country to launch 5G services probably by 2022.
On the network front, the company is designing and developing a complete 5G solution right from scratch. The company has already developed PCRF and IMS solutions for 5G and is also in the process of developing its own radio. The company is also focusing on embedding end to end security be it AI (Artificial Intelligence), Cloud Computing, IoT (Internet of Things), devices and applications which will be part of the 5G ecosystem.
Speaking at 43rd AGM, Mukesh D Ambani, Chairman and Managing Director, Reliance Industries Limited said, “This will enable us to launch a world class 5G service in India… using 100% home grown technologies and solutions.”
“This Made in India 5G solution will be ready for trials as soon as 5G spectrum is available… and can be ready for field deployment next year,” added Ambani.
5G field deployment will happen in 2021 after 5G products are being developed inhouse and trialled in house. Once field trials are completed, the company will go for 5G network deployment in a big way and it is expected that commercial 5G services will be launched in 2022.
With respect to 5G use cases, the company is developing and trialling these in their labs and also working with startups in technologies such as Cloud Computing, Big Data Analytics, Machine Learning (ML) and Artificial intelligence, Virtual and Mixed Reality, Blockchain and Computer Vision for developing applications in verticals such as education, healthcare, agriculture, smart cities, smart manufacturing and smart mobility.
Reliance Jio has also signed with Google as strategic partner for designing entry level 4G and 5G smartphones for a fraction of its current cost. The company is partnering to build an Android based smartphone operating system which can meet India’s requirement.
Once Jio’s solutions are proven at India scale, Jio Platforms would be well positioned to be an exporter of 5G solutions to other telecom operators globally, as a complete managed service, commented Ambani.
