RailTel’s FY2019-20 income increases by 20%

RailTel has registered a consolidated income of Rs. 1,243 crore in FY2019-20, a growth of 20% over FY2018-19.

The company has maintained steady profit and has been consistently paying dividends to the Ministry of Railways. RailTel is currently executing an LTE based Mobile Train Control System at 640 RKM of track. Along with upgraded signalling, the high speed communication corridor will help in predictive maintenance of tracks and locomotives as well.

RailTel has provided Wi-Fi at 5,000 stations across the country and has roped in partners like Google, Tata Trust and PGCIL for some parts of the project and also got funding from Department of Telecom USOF for 200 stations. Out of a total of about 5,000 stations commissioned so far, 70% are in rural areas which are bringing free high-speed Wi-Fi services in the vicinity of a major chunk of rural population. The recent field study at rural stations has revealed that Wi-Fi has been useful for people commuting through these stations as well as people working in these stations.

RailTel has selected Margo Network, a subsidiary of Zee Entertainment as the Digital Entertainment Service Provider (DESP) for providing Content on Demand (CoD) Service in trains and stations. CoD will be available in all premium/express/mail trains and suburban trains of Indian Railways. The project will be implemented in two years and the provision contents such as movies, shows, educational programs etc. will be made available both in paid and unpaid formats for a contact period of 10 years which includes the first two years of implementation.

A total of approximately 8,731 trains which includes 3,003 trains (Premium/Mail/Express to and fro) pan India and 2,864 pairs of suburban trains (total 5,728 trains) have been kept in the scope of the service rollout. Also CoD will be available at all Wi-Fi enabled railway stations which have crossed 5,563 railway stations as on date.

RailTel has contributed a total sum of Rs. 12.15 crore to the PM-CARES fund to support COVID-19. An amount of Rs. 7 crore through company contribution, Rs. 5 crore from CSR fund and balance through voluntary contribution of 1 day’s salary of RailTel employees.
