The government Under National Smart Grid Mission (NSGM) has sanctioned 7.23 lakh smart meters, says Union Minister for Power and New and Renewable Energy, R. K. Singh in a written reply in Rajya Sabha.
The state-wise/project-wise details for over 7 lakh smart meters are: Chandigarh (Sub Division 5 Project) – 29,500 installation is in progress and is scheduled to be completed by March 2022; Chandigarh (Complete City Project) – 184,000 scheduled to be completed by March 2022; Jharkhand (Ranchi City Project) – 360,000 tendering is in process and is scheduled to be completed by March 2024; and Rajasthan (6 towns Integrated Project) – 150,000 installation is in progress and is scheduled to be completed by March 2022.
Smart meters have the advantages of remote metering and billing, implementation of peak and off-peak tariff and demand side management through demand response.
The aims and objectives of installing smart meters is to help consumers in seamless online billing process and digital payment of bills; having access to real time tracking of electricity usage; helping consumers track their consumption patterns and adopt more energy-efficient behaviours and appliances; offering them an option to pre-pay for electricity based on their requirements and thus be in control of their total energy spends; enable time of day metering and thus, playing a pivotal role in the integration of renewable power; and helping DISCOMs function remotely by eliminating manual collections and reduced AT&C losses.
