Ericsson enables voice calls for wearables

Ericsson releases new Voice over LTE (VoLTE) – based core network functionality to enable one mobile phone number for multiple SIM based devices such as wearables.

With this solution, operators can provide voice services with the same mobile phone number as the smartphone also on wearables and is being deployed in more than 10 Ericsson VoLTE-enabled operator networks in Europe, North America and Asia Pacific

The voice calling capability is enabled in new cellular-enabled wearables that include VoLTE capabilities, and with standard SIM-cards or software embedded SIM-cards. These devices can connect to the mobile network without having to tether via a smartphone. Moreover, if they are designed with the Multi-SIM call capabilities towards the operator’s mobile network, users can also make calls without having their smartphone nearby.

Cellular connected smartwatches and other wearables with operator voice services can be useful while playing sports, performing challenging physical activities or simply when you are on the go. It is also handy for young children who could lose their phone, and elderly people for connecting in case of emergency situations.

Monica Zethzon, Head of Product Management Communication Services said, “We continue building new useful services for our installed base of VoLTE networks, to enable our customers to launch innovative consumer and enterprise communication services. With the new Multi-SIM for voice calls functionality, we support operators launching new attractive devices, which can also make high-quality operator voice calls anywhere, using the subscriber’s mobile phone number.”

Ericsson has developed a complete network solution for Multi-SIM voice calling functionality, building on its VoLTE solution based on IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS), and Secure Entitlement.
